Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder dismisses Rangers’ Old Firm defeat ahead of Champions League clash

ALFRED SCHREUDER will refuse to spoil Rangers’ derby against Celtic as he looks to plot their Champions League drop in Amsterdam.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side kick off their Group A campaign with a thrilling draw against Ajax as Rangers return to this stage after a 12-year absence.

The Dutchman is still reeling from Saturday’s Old Firm humbling that saw Celtic open a five-point lead in the title race thanks to a comfortable 4-0 win at Parkhead.

But Schreuder, who saw Ajax to victory over Cambuur in the Eredivisie, insists it was not a true reflection of the test the players will face at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Rangers face a daunting task on the night as they try to get off the ground and give themselves the perfect start in a section that also includes Liverpool and Napoli.

Former Ibrox defender Calvin Bassey is set to line up against Van Bronckhorst’s side just weeks after he completed a record move to Ajax.

And Schreuder has been impressed with the way the Nigerian international has settled into life in Amsterdam, while Bassey continues to go from strength to strength this term.
